The Taylor White Collection

The watercolour painting of the Pelican comes from the collection of Taylor White F.R.S. (1701-1772). In the mid-18th Century, White commissioned the celebrated wildlife painter, Charles Collins (c.1680 - 1744) to paint a number of specimens for his collection. The Pelican was one of the watercolour paintings, which resulted from the collaboration between White and Collins.

Taylor White, a barrister by profession, was a keen naturalist and collector. He commissioned over 900 paintings of birds, mammals, reptiles and fish from the finest painters of his day. He was a Fellow of The Royal Society and founding Treasurer of The Foundling Hospital in London.

The original watercolour of the Pelican is extremely finely painted, with great detail being seen in all of the details of the painting. This depth of colour and detail has been captured brilliantly through the digitalisation process and is replicated for you on this delightful journal.

The Pelican

The Pelican (Scientific name: Pelecanus occidentalis) is a distinctive and awe-inspiring creature that graces the coastlines of North and South America. With their enormous bill and unique throat pouch, pelicans are true marvels of nature that never fail to amaze.

Native to the breathtaking shores of North America and the picturesque northern coast of South America, the pelican is an enchanting bird that's impossible to ignore. Their extraordinary appearance sets them apart from other seabirds, making them an unforgettable sight for birdwatchers and beachgoers alike.

The pelican's most iconic feature is its sizable bill, which is accompanied by an ingenious throat pouch. This fascinating contraption acts as a built-in fishing net, allowing the pelican to effortlessly scoop up fish and drain water with remarkable efficiency. Watch these majestic birds in action, and you'll be mesmerized by their unparalleled fishing prowess!

Not only do pelicans boast an impressive fishing technique, but they also exhibit fascinating social behavior. These charming birds can often be spotted basking in the sun, preening their feathers, or gracefully soaring through the sky in search of their next meal.
