The Taylor White Collection

The watercolour painting of the House Martins comes from the collection of Taylor White F.R.S. (1701-1772). In the mid-18th Century, White commissioned the celebrated wildlife painter, Jacobus van Huysum (1688 - 1740) to paint a number of specimens for his collection. The House Martins was one of the watercolour paintings, which resulted from the collaboration between White and van Huysum.

Taylor White, a barrister by profession, was a keen naturalist and collector. He commissioned over 900 paintings of birds, mammals, reptiles and fish from the finest painters of his day. He was a Fellow of The Royal Society and founding Treasurer of The Foundling Hospital in London.

The original watercolour of the House Martins is extremely finely painted, with great detail being seen in all of the details of the painting. This depth of colour and detail has been captured brilliantly through the digitalisation process and is replicated for you on this delightful journal.

The House Martin

Get ready for a summer spectacle, as the delightful House Martins (Scientific name: Delichon urbicum) grace the skies! These charming little birds, boasting an impressive range, make their way from Europe, Turkey, the Middle East, and even parts of eastern Asia, eventually over-wintering in Africa.

As the calendar flips to March and April, keep your eyes peeled for these agile aviators, who make their grand entrance into the UK before saying their farewells and heading back to Africa in September and October. House Martins sure know how to make an entrance, and their departure is equally memorable. These fascinating creatures don't shy away from human company either, often choosing to nest beneath the eaves of houses.

The sight of House Martins flitting gracefully through the skies is truly a summer highlight you won't want to miss. With House Martins on the scene, it's clear that summer has truly arrived!
