Bird Cards

Behold, this series of bird and wildlife paintings, which exudes the majesty and magic of the 18th Century, commissioned by the esteemed Taylor White F.R.S. (1701-1772). A man of many accomplishments, White was not only a barrister and judge, but also a governor and the first Treasurer of The Foundling Hospital in London and Fellow of The Royal Society, as well as an amateur naturalist. His extensive connections granted him access to specimens from the British Museum and the Royal Menagerie at the Tower of London, where his father-in-law, Major-General John Armstrong, held powerful offices as Surveyor-General of the Ordnance, Chief Royal Engineer, and Quartermaster-General to the Forces.

Moreover, Taylor White counted among his friends the illustrious Sir Joseph Banks, Bt. and master clockmaker, John Harrison, who brought back exotic birds from their voyages around the world – Banks on his legendary expeditions with Captain James Cook, and Harrison on his daring journeys to the Caribbean to prove the accuracy of his sea clocks for the Board of Longitude.

The original watercolour paintings, painstakingly crafted by the finest wildlife and botanical painters of the early to mid-18th Century, are a testament to the artistry and skill of the era. Each brushstroke captures the intricate details of the birds’ plumage and features with unparalleled precision. Now, through the marvels of digitization, these masterpieces are reborn as fine art greetings cards, ready to grace your walls or be presented as a cherished gift to a beloved friend or family member. Immerse yourself in the splendour of these exquisite works of art, and let the magic of the 18th Century come alive in every card.
