Birds have long been a favourite subject for close observation and fine painting, and this collection brings together artwork built around exactly that tradition. Each piece began life as a detailed study of a single species, capturing plumage, posture and colouring with the kind of accuracy that comes from looking carefully rather than working from memory or imagination.
At present, the artwork behind this collection is drawn from the Taylor White Collection, a body of 18th Century watercolours produced with genuine ornithological care. As the range grows, further bird artwork may be added from other sources, but the same standard applies throughout: each piece is chosen for the quality of its depiction of its subject, not simply for decorative appeal.

Birds As A Theme
This collection is organised around a single subject: birds, depicted with scientific attentiveness, rather than stylised or decorative intent. Rather than grouping artwork by when it was produced or which artistic tradition it belongs to, this page brings together every bird-themed piece across the site, so it can be browsed as a coherent subject in its own right.
The Taylor White Collection: 18th Century Bird Watercolours
The bird artwork currently featured here originates from the Taylor White Collection, a set of 18th Century watercolours with documented provenance through McGill University Library. These works were produced during a period when detailed observational painting of birds served a genuinely scientific purpose, recording plumage and form with a precision that has allowed the species depicted to remain identifiable centuries later.
Historical and Ornithological Value
Because these watercolours were painted directly from specimens rather than composed from description, they carry both artistic and documentary value. The result is artwork that functions equally well as a study of a species and as a piece to be displayed for its own visual merit.
The Range of Bird Species
The species represented within this subject vary considerably in colouring, size and native range, spanning both familiar birds and more exotic or unusual plumage. Each piece is identified by its common name alongside its full and Latin names, so the artwork can be appreciated with the same accuracy with which it was originally painted.
A Growing Theme
While the Taylor White Collection is the primary source of bird artwork on the site today, this subject is not tied exclusively to any one collection. Future additions from other sources will be included here on the same basis: accurate, carefully observed depictions of birds, regardless of when or how they were produced.
