The Spiritual Collection takes its inspiration from the devotional art of mediaeval and Renaissance Europe, in particular the triptych: a hinged, three-panelled altarpiece designed to hold a central sacred scene flanked by two supporting panels. It is one of the oldest formats in Western religious art, and one still recognisable at a glance.
Each piece in the collection is an original AI-generated composition, created with close reference to the colour, symmetry, and gilded detail of historical devotional painting. Nothing here reproduces a specific existing artwork, artist, or manuscript; the aim is to capture the atmosphere of that tradition rather than to copy it.
Where Ellie White's other collections are rooted in documented natural history or archival material, the Spiritual Collection is built for quiet contemplation: still, ordered compositions intended to sit as comfortably in a hallway or study as in any more formal setting.

What is the Spiritual Collection?
The Spiritual Collection is a range of original AI-generated artwork inspired by the visual language of mediaeval and Renaissance devotional painting. The majority of pieces follow the triptych format: a three-panelled composition traditionally used to focus attention on a central image, with two flanking panels offering complementary or supporting scenes.
The Triptych Format: A Brief History
The triptych has its roots in early Christian and Byzantine art and became a defining feature of church altarpieces across mediaeval and Renaissance Europe. Its hinged structure allowed the outer panels to fold inward, protecting the central image and creating a different, often more restrained, scene when closed. By the Renaissance, triptychs had become a vehicle for some of the period's most ambitious devotional painting, combining gilding, tempera, and later oil paint with elaborate iconographic programmes.
Mediaeval and Renaissance influences
Artwork in this collection draws on the conventions of that period: gold or gilded backgrounds, formal symmetry, muted or jewel-toned palettes, and the use of composition to direct the eye toward a central figure or scene. These are treated as a visual and historical reference point rather than a template for any single painting, so no artwork in the collection reproduces a specific historical piece, artist, or manuscript.
How These Pieces Are Made
Every image in the Spiritual Collection is generated using AI, guided by detailed reference to historical devotional art rather than to any one existing work. This approach allows the collection to explore a style of painting that would otherwise be difficult to produce new work in at this scale, while remaining transparent that the results are original, contemporary compositions rather than reproductions of historical objects.
Who The Spiritual Collection Is For
The Spiritual Collection suits anyone drawn to the calm, formal qualities of devotional art, whether or not that interest is religious in nature. The triptych format in particular lends itself to spaces intended for quiet reflection, and to anyone who appreciates the craft and symbolism of mediaeval and Renaissance painting as a visual tradition in its own right.
