An Angel Appears to the Shepherds depicts the angel’s announcement of Christ’s birth described in Luke 2:8-14. Painted in a Neo-Renaissance style with Pre-Raphaelite influences, the piece pairs the luminous modelling and idealised figures of Renaissance devotional art with the jewel-toned colour and romantic naturalism of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. A haloed angel descends through a star-filled sky, casting golden light over shepherds and their flock, with the town of Bethlehem visible on the hillside beyond.
