The Violet Auricula (Primula auricula) is shown here in its terracotta pot, three trusses of deep violet, white-edged blooms with orange-yellow eyes rising above a rosette of thick, blue-green leaves. Auriculas were once among the most prized “florists’ flowers” in European horticulture, grown competitively and displayed on tiered “auricula theatres” to show off their neat, symmetrical form. Its artist and date are unrecorded.
