About The Pale Blue Auricula
The Auricula (Primula auricula) is a hardy alpine primula, native to the European Alps and Carpathians, known for the fine white farina that dusts its leaves and blooms. Cultivated in Britain since the 17th and 18th centuries, it became a favourite among artisan gardeners who bred prize specimens as “florists’ flowers”. This watercolour shows a Pale Blue Auricula, a self variety prized for its pure, even colouring, growing in a terracotta pot. The artist and date of the piece are not currently known.
