The Taylor White Collection

The watercolour painting of the Nightingale comes from the collection of Taylor White F.R.S. (1701-1772). In the mid-18th Century, White commissioned the celebrated wildlife painter, Charles Collins (c.1680 - 1744) to paint a number of specimens for his collection. The Nightingale was one of the watercolour paintings, which resulted from the collaboration between White and Collins.

Taylor White, a barrister by profession, was a keen naturalist and collector. He commissioned over 900 paintings of birds, mammals, reptiles and fish from the finest painters of his day. He was a Fellow of The Royal Society and founding Treasurer of The Foundling Hospital in London.

The original watercolour of the Nightingale is extremely finely painted, with great detail being seen in all of the details of the painting. This depth of colour and detail has been captured brilliantly through the digitalisation process and is replicated for you on this delightful journal.

The Nightingale

The Nightingale (Scientific name: Luscinia megarhynchos) is a charming avian virtuoso, renowned for its mesmerizing and powerful melodies. This vocal maestro has captured hearts and imaginations for centuries, inspiring countless poems, songs, books, operas, and even fairy tales. Get ready to embark on a tuneful adventure as we explore the captivating world of the Nightingale!

Picture a bird slightly larger than the familiar Robin, adorned in a modest brown plumage that contrasts beautifully with its eye-catching reddish tail. The Nightingale's underside boasts a delicate buff hue, completing the ensemble with a subtle yet alluring touch.

These melodic wonders can be found soaring through the skies between Germany and Spain in Europe, extending their range to Asia Minor and North Africa. They favour nesting close to the ground amidst thick vegetation, ensuring a safe and secure hideaway from potential threats.

In the UK, our melodious friend is primarily spotted in the South East. However, it's worth noting that Nightingale populations have been dwindling in the region, unlike in mainland Europe where they continue to thrive and enchant listeners with their divine harmonies.
