Muted Coral Hellebore

Muted Coral Hellebore is a botanical study of Helleborus × hybridus, the hybrid hellebore widely known as the Lenten rose. A single stem is shown with one open, nodding flower, a closed bud beneath it and several serrated, grey-green leaves, all rendered in the precise, observational manner of traditional botanical illustration.

The flower is the focus of the composition. Its broad, overlapping sepals move from rose pink through a soft, dusty coral to pale cream-green at the margins, and are finely flecked with crimson. This speckling is characteristic of many garden hellebores. At the centre, a crown of pale yellow-green stamens stands out against the deeper colour around it, while the bud below shows the same tones in miniature, still tightly furled. The foliage is deeply veined and finely toothed, with the greens warmed by touches of rust and bronze along the edges.

Botanically, the showy parts of a hellebore are sepals rather than true petals, which is why the blooms are so long-lasting. The genus Helleborus belongs to the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. Hybrid hellebores are evergreen or semi-evergreen perennials that flower from late winter into early spring, often between January and April in British gardens, when little else is in bloom. Their flowers typically nod downwards, a habit this three-quarter view records clearly.

Muted Coral Hellebore is part of the Ellie White Floral Collection. It is a modern, human-guided generated image, created in the style of watercolour botanical illustration, with a restrained palette of coral, rose, sage and grey-green, and fine veining picked out in darker tones across both sepals and leaves.
