Seated on a low stone wall beneath a canopy of stars, the Virgin Mary holds the infant Christ close, her head bowed towards him in a moment of quiet tenderness. Both figures are crowned with gold halos rendered in the manner of mediaeval devotional panel painting, and Mary is wrapped in a deep blue mantle scattered with small gold stars, a colour long associated with her purity and her role as Queen of Heaven. Christ, dressed in pale cream robes, reaches up to touch the fastening at his mother’s shoulder, an intimate gesture that softens the formality of the composition.
Behind the pair, a hillside town of pale stone buildings and a bell tower recalls Bethlehem itself, its rooftops catching the last light beneath a night sky dense with stars. To the upper right, the Star of Bethlehem burns brighter than the rest, its long rays marking the guiding light of the Nativity narrative. An olive tree stands to the left of the composition and white lilies grow at the foot of the wall, traditional symbols within Marian iconography of peace and purity respectively.
This artwork belongs to Ellie White’s Spiritual Collection, a body of contemporary devotional imagery composed in the tradition of mediaeval and early icon painting. Rather than reproducing an historical original, each piece in the collection is created to sit comfortably within that visual language, gold halos, jewel-toned drapery and a stillness of gesture, while remaining a new work in its own right. The Madonna and Christ Child With The Bethlehem Star draws together the Nativity’s central figures and its most recognisable symbol, the star, into a single quiet scene suited to the Christmas season and to devotional display throughout the year.
